    The annual spraying program is being undertaken by Contractors from July through to October 2021 to control environmental weeds in the following bushland areas:

    • Shenton Bushland
    • Allen Park
    • Hollywood Reserve
    • Birdwood Parade Bushland
    • Point Resolution Bushland
    • Mt Claremont Oval Bushland
    • Mt Claremont Community Centre
    • Swanbourne Estate

    The City will be focusing on the control of bulbous weeds, and annual and perennial grass weeds using the herbicides listed below:

    • Metsulfuron-methyl: used to control bulbous weeds
    • 2 2-DPA (Dalapon): used to control bulbous weeds
    • Glyphosate: used in conjunction with metsulfuron-methyl to control bulbous weeds
    • Fusilade: used to control annual and perennial grass weeds.

    Signage will be displayed whilst these works are occurring in accordance with Department of Health regulations.

    The City undertakes environmental weed control to improve biodiversity values and to reduce the negative impacts environmental weeds cause to the ecosystems they invade, for example they compete with native plants, thereby reducing the species and diversity for both flora and fauna.

    Environmental weeds cause erosion, alter water availability, change soil nutrients, increase the likelihood of bush fires and change vegetation communities within bushland areas.

    For further information, please contact Vicki Shannon, the City's Environmental Conservation Coordinator on (08) 9273 3500, or email vshannon@nedlands.wa.gov.au

    The City of Nedlands in conjunction with the Friends of Allen Park and the Swanbourne Coastal Alliance received $16,433 (ex GST) from the Western Australian Planning Commission through the Coastwest Grants Program 2020/21 to undertake the project “Swanbourne Oval Greenway Development – Stage 2”.

    This project will complete the greenway development works surrounding Swanbourne Oval and it is being undertaken in accordance with the Allen Park Masterplan and Swanbourne Oval refurbishment works. Stage 2 of the project will convert the southern part of Swanbourne Oval to coastal bushland (approximately 0.2 ha) as well as undertake ongoing restoration of adjacent coastal areas within Allen Park. It will involve site preparation in April/May, followed by installation of certified mulch in May and revegetation with 4500 low growing locally occurring native shrubs and ground covers in June and July.

    Once stage 2 is complete approximately 0.45 of a hectare of reticulated turf will have been converted to coastal shrubland. This greenway project assists the City to protect biodiversity, improve habitats and connectivity for local fauna as well as increasing the City’s capacity to absorb greenhouse gas emissions.

    Check out the Document Library for the map.

    Objectives

    • Increase the integrity of the coastal corridor by developing and enhancing ecological linkages to adjacent coastal areas north and south in Cottesloe and Cambridge;
    • Enhance the existing greenway corridor at Allen Park by increasing the area of bushland in the Reserve;
    • Removal of invasive weeds;
    • Revegetation with local provenance native seedlings;
    • Maintenance of public access such as beach fencing;
    • Improvement of bushland condition;
    • Reducing erosion;
    • Increasing habitat of fauna such as the resident White-winged and Chestnut Fairy-wrens
    • Strengthening two regional greenways - the coastal greenway and the Bold Park to Kings Park Greenway
    • Protection of environmental values and biodiversity within the coastal zone;
    • Increasing the atheistic quality of the area; and
    • Building capacity by involving the community.

    To build the new turnbacks at Claremont Station, eight weeks of intensive construction activity will take place from 5 February until 5 April 2021.

    This will see major service impacts to the Fremantle Line during this work, including:

    • No trains stopping at Claremont Station, with bus services only operating
    • Three full line weekend closures, with train replacement bus services being available.
    • Fremantle Line services between Showgrounds and Fremantle stations reduced to a 30-minute frequency with passengers required to change trains at Cottesloe Station (some passengers may also need to change at Showgrounds)

    You can find detailed passenger service information available on the Transperth website. Visit the Transperth website or download the Transperth app to sign up for My Alerts to stay informed on the upcoming disruptions.

    These new turnbacks are an important part of the Claremont Station Project. Once completed they will allow more trains to run between Claremont Station and the CBD during peak times and provide direct access to the new Airport Line from Claremont Station. Claremont Station is also being refurbished during this period.

    The City advises that the public access along the foreshore from Beaton Park to Paul Hasluck Reserve, between the Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club premises and the river, will be temporarily closed for a period of up to 6 months.

    The works to be undertaken will include improvements to public access through this portion of the river foreshore that include removal of the boat slipway, removal of asphalt surfaces, installation of a new footpath, new reticulation and landscaping.

    A map for reference of what area is closed to public access can be found in the document library.
