The City apologises for the previous delay in delivering Stage 2 of the Safe Active Streets project and we appreciate the community's patience.

WCP Civil will be recommencing the works from Monday, 10 August 2020. The work will commence from Dalkeith Road and continue along Jenkins Avenue for a period of three months until completion. However, this will be dependent on the weather and resources.

The delay in completing this work was impacted by COVID-19, but also due to an audit of Stage 1, commissioned by the City to identify any changes that could be implemented based on reviewing the Elizabeth Street portion of work. The audit identified an opportunity to improve the design along Jenkins Avenue based on this audit, whilst acknowledging the need to maintain the project within the existing budget.

    The key changes involve:

    • Removal of the raised plateaus through the intersection with the exception of the one at Dalketh Road
    • Installation of road humps adjacent to tree nibs approximately mid-way between intersections
    • Reduce the gradient on the Dalkeith Road plateau.

The changes have been approved by the Department of Transport and Main Roads WA, The modifications are expected to improve cyclist safety by providing a gentler slope and an option to bypass the road humps if desired.

The new design is available to view in the document library. Images of how these road humps look on road surfaces can be viewed in the Photo Library.

Unfortunately the work scheduled to recommence on the 22 June 2020 has been deferred.

The City apologises to the community for the unforeseen delays in enabling this work to be completed as originally planned.

We are currently in neogiations with the contractor to discuss when this work will be rescheduled and the new expected timelines for completion. Being Winter, this work could still see further delays due to bad weather.

In the interim, the City is taking immediate action to improve the onsite temporary traffic management and remove excess soil currently stored on the verge.
