Traffic effects
Share Traffic effects on Facebook Share Traffic effects on Twitter Share Traffic effects on Linkedin Email Traffic effects linkThe City has received some feedback in relation to the possible effects of traffic which might be displaced as a result of this project and the median strip in Broadway across the Elizabeth Street intersection. We provide the following information:
- The safe active street is intended to prioritise active travel along this route. Non-local car traffic is well catered for on the surrounding network.
- Given there’s only 1,500 vehicles per day at the eastern end of Elizabeth Street, the restriction of right turn movements at Elizabeth/Broadway will be low impact and is appropriate. The surrounding road network can easily absorb this, and turning movements onto Broadway are well supported with roundabouts at Princess/Broadway and Edward/Broadway. This aspect of the proposed safe active street was independently evaluated through an external peer review process and endorsed. In addition, in terms of property access, the properties between Kingsway and Broadway can be accessed via Princess Road or Edward Street.
- Modifying the Elizabeth/Broadway intersection as well as the central median on Broadway will achieve significant safety benefits as there are a number of conflicting movements at this intersection, which compromise pedestrian and cyclist safety. As this route is largely focused on improving safe access to schools, UWA and other local destinations.
- Intersection turn movements will be collected in March to establish a baseline prior to implementation as well as identify user behaviour trends at this intersection. Subsequent detailed design will take this data into consideration.
