Waratah Avenue Place-Making Strategy

What do you think is best for the Waratah Avenue village precinct? Have you heard about the proposal to improve pedestrian accessibility and amenity? Whether you work, visit or live in the area, own a property or run a business, we want to hear from you.

Stemming from the Waratah Place-Making Strategy, developed in partnership with the community in 2015, work has since progressed on a concept design for hard surfaces in the area. This body of work identified the need for a wider footpath suitable for cafe alfresco areas and improved accessibility for pedestrians in the street and in crossing Waratah Avenue.

The City is now seeking your feedback on this draft concept design.

Stage one of the project is designed to improve pedestrian access to the shopping strip and village while, at the same time, slowing vehicle speeds to improve pedestrian safety.

Taking in the section of Waratah Avenue between Adelma and Alexander Roads, the design incorporates improved pedestrian access and street amenity as follows:

  • A wide footpath for pedestrian access and cafe alfresco areas.
  • Narrowing the road to 6 metres and changing its alignment.
  • Parking modifications (parallel and angled).
  • Improved driveway access.
  • Modify access to Genesta Crescent.
  • A raised plateau for pedestrian crossing.
  • Increased street tree plantings, new planter boxes and bollards to delineate vehicle and pedestrian spaces.
  • Retention of bus zone and shelter.
  • Modifying the traffic island and children’s crossing at Adelma Road.
  • New roundabout at Alexander Road.
  • Relocation of street lights.

  • Storm water drainage maintenance

    Storm water drainage

    The City has appointed Contractors, Drainflow Services to undertake storm water drainage maintenance and associated works from Monday, 4 February 2019 for five days during weekdays between 7am and 3pm.

    The works will include high-pressure water jetting, CCTV inspection of the existing storm water pipe network and remove debris.

    Please be aware that street parking along Waratah Avenue will be temporarily unavailable as service vehicles move between each drainage pit location.

    Traffic management and Traffic Controllers will be in place to assist motorists and pedestrians to move safely around the work area.

    The Council at its meeting on 27 November 2018 endorsed the amended Waratah Avenue design including the provision of a roundabout at the intersection of Alexander Road, subject to the number of available car bays being retained.

    The City will now progress with the schedule for implementation. Further communications and liaison with business and property owners will occur at key stages of the project as it progresses.

    The first stage of the $1.2 million project relates to Waratah Avenue between Alexander and Adelma Roads with concept plans developed for an upgraded streetscape and a new raised pedestrian-friendly crossing near the C3 Church.

    Previous community feedback had indicated the need for a wider footpath, suitable for cafe alfresco areas and improved accessibility for pedestrians, leading to the Waratah Avenue Place-Making Strategy.

    Stage one is designed to improve pedestrian access to the shopping strip and village while, at the same time, slowing vehicle speeds to improve pedestrian safety. There will be new areas for picturesque street trees and planter boxes, which will also provide a separation between pedestrians and vehicles. The design requirements will result in a decrease of about 10 car parking bays but, overall, 294 will remain in the precinct.

    Stage one of the project will predominantly be supported by municipal funding – but the $205,000 road resurfacing component will have two-thirds funded by the Metropolitan Regional Road Group.

    A proposed stage two of the Waratah Avenue redevelopment involves upgrades to Genesta Park, Genesta Crescent and a new roundabout at the Waratah Avenue and Alexander Road intersection.

    The Council at its meeting on Tuesday, 24 July 2018 approved the concept plans for the proposed improvements to the hard surfaces for Waratah Avenue village precinct.

    This project stems from the Waratah Place-Making Strategy (see document library) developed in partnership with the community in 2015.
