Do you use Monash Avenue or Smyth Road on a regular basis, or live or work near this intersection?

During 2018 engagement was undertaken on a proposal to construct a roundabout at the T-Junction where Monash Avenue and Smyth Road intersect. Following the engagement, the Council approved for the roundabout to be constructed.

The roundabout proposal came as a result of the recent development at the QEII Medical Centre, Hollywood Hospital and surrounds and the need to improve traffic efficiency, particularly at peak times.

The City have appointed contractors, Civcon Construction to progress with the roundabout construction which will commence from the end of April.

The section of Smyth Road (Karella Street to Aberdare Road) will be closed to motorists to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Smyth Road and Monash Avenue to improve traffic safety and efficiency, particularly at peak times.

Local traffic management will be provided for residents, pedestrians, cyclists and parents of Hollywood Primary School children during this period and detours will be in place around the site to assist motorists who use Smyth Road as their main route (see map).

Signage will be on display at the works site, advising of motorists of the road closures and detours.

The road closure will ensure that work can be undertaken safely and with the least disturbance to road users and residents.

We thank you for your patience during this time.

  • Community engagement supports the roundabout proposal with modifications

The City is progressing to a detailed design following the review of feedback from community engagement and taking into consideration the suggestions and feedback from the community received on this project.

The City developed the design for the roundabout taking into consideration site elements and constraints, traffic volumes and movements using best practice guides. It provides a more even distribution of traffic and slows motorists down as Smyth Road traffic will need to give way to the Monash Avenue traffic.

Comments and suggestions raised in relation to pedestrians and bike riders have been considered. The City is assessing these comments in the final design to nehance safety for pedestrian and bike riders to cross the road by extending the pedestrian pathway, adjusting the alignment to improve pedestrian safety.

The proposals to extend the proposed traffic island to assist with traffic congestion during school drop-off and pick-up was considered as a design modificatoin. Unfortunately using the proposed median island and right-turn bans will have a significant negative impact on the operation of the roundabout and will not accommodate traffic distribution in Smyth Road, especially during drop-off and pick-up times.

In relation to suggestions for increased formalised crossings (e.g. pedestrian lights, zebra crossings), the City considers that the formal zebra crossing near the Hollywood Private Hospital (on Monash between Williams and Smyth) along with a crossing space on Monash Avenue at the School and the traffic warden system at this time is adequate.

The full report can be found in the document library.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this project.

The City wishes to advise you of a proposal for road modifications at the intersection of Smyth Road and Monash Avenue.

As part of the 2018/19 Capital Works Program, the City is proposing to construct a new roundabout at the existing T-Junction with Smyth Road and Monash Avenue (see document library for concept drawing). This proposal comes as a result of recent development at the QEII Medical Centre, Hollywood Hospital and surrounds, in an effort to improve traffic efficiency at this intersection particularly during peak times.

Prior to the proposed road modifications being programmed, the City would like to understand your views and/or if this impacts you, particularly stakeholders within close proximity to the proposed roundabout
