PROJECT BACKGROUND

The City is seeking feedback from residents, businesses and road users on proposed road reconstruction and streetscape improvement works on Asquith Street, Mt Claremont, between Rochdale Road and Adderley Street. proposing to reduce the speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h along the entirety of Asquith Street from Adderley Street to Landon Way, subject to the required approval process.

The project is currently in the detailed design stage and is partly funded through the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Program. The City has prepared a draft detailed design and is now seeking community feedback before the design is finalised and the project progresses toward procurement and delivery planning.

This section of road has been prioritised because the existing pavement is ageing and deteriorating, and the area experiences regular use from nearby shops, pedestrians, parking and local traffic.

COMMUNITY BENEFITS

The proposed Asquith Street upgrade is intended to make this section of street safer, more comfortable and more attractive for residents, businesses, pedestrians and road users.

As this is a busy local centre near the Mt Claremont Shops, the proposed design places a strong focus on pedestrian safety, accessibility, drainage, road condition and the overall amenity of the area.

Safer speeds around the shops
The proposed reduction from 50 km/h to 40 km/h would support a safer local village precinct around the Mt Claremont Shops. This area includes pedestrian movement, on-street parking, business access, turning vehicles and local traffic. A lower speed environment would improve safety and comfort for all road users, with minimal impact on travel time over this short section.

A more walkable local centre
Improved footpaths, kerbing and landscaping would make it easier to walk to and around the Mt Claremont Shops, supporting local access and nearby businesses.

Better accessibility
Upgraded paths and crossing points would improve access for people of all ages and abilities, including prams, older residents and people using mobility aids.

More reliable drainage
Stormwater drainage upgrades would help reduce localised flooding and ponding, protecting the road, verges and nearby properties.

A smoother, longer-lasting road
Road pavement reconstruction would provide a safer and more reliable driving surface, reduce potholes and maintenance needs, and extend the life of the road.

A greener streetscape
New landscaping and public realm improvements would add shade, greenery and visual amenity, helping to strengthen the character of the local centre.

PROJECT DETAILS

The proposed works include:

  1. reconstruction of the existing road pavement
  2. stormwater drainage upgrades
  3. new kerbing
  4. pedestrian path improvements
  5. landscaping and public realm improvements near the Mt Claremont Shops
  6. improvements around the Asquith Street and Strickland Street intersection
  7. a proposed speed reduction from 50 km/h to 40 km/h between Rochdale Road and Landon Way, subject to Main Roads WA approval and any other required approvals.

COMMUNITY FEEDBACK

Feedback will be accepted from 8am Thursday 2 July until 5pm Wednesday 15 July 2026.

The City is seeking feedback from nearby residents, property owners, businesses, workers, visitors and road users before the design is finalised.
