The City of Nedlands continues to progress the underground power across the City.

The final projects comprise of:

Western Power have awarded the contract to Alliance Power & Data Pty Ltd (APD) for the design works of the remaining three projects. This work is expected to be completed by late 2021.

  • Detailed design has commenced

    The City is progressing with the detailed designs for the three remaining areas (Floreat, Mt Claremont, Hollywood East) for the installation of underground power.

    Western Power have been engaged to complete the detailed designs and cost estimates which is due by mid-2020. Once the designs are received a report will be presented to Council.

    At this point in time there are no specific timelines available for the completion of the works or what the priority on the areas will be.

  • Hollywood West project all but completed

    All civil works have been completed for zones one, two and three of this project.

    Overhead line dismantling was undertaken during December and into early January 2019 including the completion of the street lighting installation.

    A ceremony to celebrate the removal of the “last pole” and the finalisation of the project was held on Tuesday 29 January 2019 in Weld Street adjacent Carrington Park.

    The project has come in on budget and slightly ahead of schedule, overall a very successful Underground Power Project for the City and the Community.

    A big thank you to all the patience of the residents while this work was being undertaken.

    Thank you to the project participants (Western Power, Cable Layers Australia) who have worked collaboratively with the City in the delivery of the project.

  • Nedlands Triangle (Alfred Road) - Update

    Contractors have commenced preliminary works in Zone 6 on 6 December 2018. This work mainly consisted of the location of services within the triangle area and along Alfred Road.

    The project is still in its early stages and is due for completion in April 2019.


  • Carrington Street - partial road closures

    During January 2019 there will be partial road closures on Carrington Street between Dalkeith Road and Ord Street to facilitate the removal of overhead power lines and the installation of new underground street lighting.

    To assist with the smooth and safe movement through the work site detours will be in place.

    The Town of Cambridge underground power project has commenced following the completion of the detailed design by Western Power.

  • Update on West Hollywood Project

    Contractors, Cable Layers commenced the project in April 2018. Zone One: Loftus Street area has commenced which will include service locating, service road crossings, directional drilling of low volage ( LV) cables and installing the consumer mains.

    The project is currently running on budget and on schedule.

    The Town of Claremont and Western Power project involving properties within the Alfred Road and Claremont Triangle is commencing from June 2018.

    The interest rate is likely to be 4% interest. However, this percentage will be confirmed when the City finalises the borrowings. The percentage charged will relate to interest rates applied to borrowings at the time by the WA Treasury Corporation. The City will ensure the lowest rate available is achieved.

    The administration costs are included in the price estimate.

    The ten annual instalments will be of equal value.

    The next stage of the underground power project is progressing by Western Power who are currently completing the tendering process for the project. The second stage will take approximately nine months to compete and include the installation of the remaining transformers and switchgear, new underground network cables, customer mains from the property boundary and new LED street lighting.

    The next stage will also include advice on the final individual contribution for each property and payment options (single or 10 year loan).

    The City is currently developing a newsletter for all property owners within the project area which will be distributed once Western Power has confirmed the successful tenderer and the work flow for the installation across the project area. Property owners will also be receiving a series of advices from Western Power or their contractors throughout the project as various stages of the work begins. The City will also be issuing further newsletters and updates via Your Voice Nedlands at key stages throughout the project.

    Western Power will be undertaking works to install ground mounted transformer units and switch gear (630 KVA 11 KV MPS TX) in the drainage sumps at Loftus and Napier Streets which are essential for the management of power distribution for the Hollywood West underground power project.
