The design for the remaining Underground Power Projects within the City is underway, with Western Power currently well into the design phase. The design is expected to be complete by August 2021.

The Nedlands Council has passed a resolution for all Underground Power to be complete by June 2026, and this is the end date the project team are working towards. The exact timing for individual streets will be determined once designs are complete and a construction contract awarded.

Nedlands ratepayers within the area of the West Hollywood Underground Power Project are being delivered a refund in the form of a reduced bill with their 2019-20 rates notice, as a result of the project coming in well under budget.

Approximately $250,000 is currently being returned to the West Hollywood Underground Power Project ratepayers, with another $250,000 transferred back into the underground power reserve fund. The savings have been realised through a combination of sound project management skills and an excellent working partnership between the City, Western Power and contractors.

The City is very pleased that the project came in under budget and delivered a refund to residents as a result of excellent project management and cooperation between Western Power and the City.

Normal practice with projects of this size is that an amount is withheld to manage any defects that may occur within the defects liability period of 52 weeks post-project completion date. This means, if no issues arise during the defects liability period, further refunds may be passed on in early-mid 2020.

The Council at its Ordinary Meeting of 26 February 2019 supported a Notice of Motion that funds be included in the 2019/20 budget for the detail design of underground power for the remaining properties in the City with aerial power.

This is supported by the Administration and an amount of $220,000 has been included in the draft budget for next year.

The benefit of this action is that the City of Nedlands will be project ready when Western Power and/or the State Government announces how underground power will be retro-fitted into the future.

It must be noted that the City cannot legally install underground power assets and connect to the grid without the support of Western Power.

Further information in regard to the current funding models, the City's underground power policy and relationship with Western Power can be found in the FAQs on this engagement page.
