St Johns Wood Boulevard - A new park being planned for the area

This park is now complete.

The new park at the undeveloped public open space (POS) west of the old Swanbourne Hospital on St Johns Wood Boulevard has been completed.

Draft playground concept plans (nature-based and modular) have been developed (see document library).

These designs take into consideration the outcomes of the previous engagement feedback which was undertaken for the development of the park.

The City has sought multiple playground designs and is presenting two designs for your feedback based on the following criteria:

delivery within the approved budget of $136,000 with best value for money
best incorporated suggestions and ideas received from residents through the previous feedback
compliance with playground safety standards
appropriateness to the existing constructed play area
provision of inter-generational interaction
demonstrate a point of difference to playgrounds in close proximity.

Hi Paula,
The nature-based design was chosen for the installation. The City has engaged a contractor and work will commence on the playground around February 2020.
Share I think it’s great there was community engagement on the design on playground but why wasn’t this done when choosing a piece of art. I drove home this afternoon to see a monstrosity of what is called art. When you have gone to that much effort to create a great space with native plants and really fitting with the area when you plan to ruin the whole thing with some modern lump of metal. Why couldn’t they have picked something fitting in the theme of the park. Thank you for your feedback on the newly installed artwork at Annie Dorrington park. The artwork was commissioned by the City of Nedlands Arts Committee, who chose this artwork from over 17 proposals. The Arts Committee is made up of your elected council members as well as some community members. The selected artwork was presented at a full Council meeting for final approval before commissioning commenced.

The artwork is titled ‘Windows into the Past’ and the artist is Tony Pankiw. The artwork has connections to the site and references the artist Annie Dorrington in the decorative panels on top of the smallest of the two peaked ‘roof’ forms. Annie Dorrington was a local artist who resided for a time at Montgomery Hall and who was one of the original contributing artists to the Australian Flag. The panels on the larger ‘roof’ form reference the activities that Montgomery Hall has hosted over many generations: social dances, theatre, movie nights, as well as the local community – children on scooters, wedding celebrations and more. The artist was very sensitive to the history of the site and its current uses by the local community.

In early 2020, the City of Nedlands will have a launch event for the park and Artwork and we will invite local residents to attend. You will have a chance to meet the artist and the Arts Committee members and share your opinions with them.
