Purpose

The City of Nedlands is seeking community feedback on the proposal to designate two newly constructed parks in the Montario Quarter, Shenton Park, as dog exercise areas. This action is in accordance with Section 31(3A) of the Dog Act 1976 and Section 1.7 of the Local Government Act 1995.

Proposal Overview

Development WA has completed two parks within Montario Quarter designed specifically for dog exercise. These parks, located on the corner of Lemnos Street and Guttman Approach, feature secure fencing, entry systems, shade, waste disposal facilities, benches, drinking fountains, and areas for dogs to interact safely. The smaller park, approximately 440 square meters, caters to passive and smaller dogs, while the larger park, around 1140 square meters, accommodates more active and larger dogs with added agility equipment and sensory areas.

Community Feedback

The City of Nedlands invites residents to provide their comments on the proposed designation of these parks as dog exercise areas. Feedback will be collected over a 28-day period, in line with legislative requirements. This public consultation ensures that community voices are heard and considered in the final decision-making process.

This is open now and closing Monday 5pm 16 September 2024.

Strategic Alignment

This proposal aligns with the City of Nedlands Council Plan 2022-23, supporting the vision of fostering a sustainable and vibrant community. By enhancing public spaces, the initiative contributes to a healthy, active, and safe community, making the city an attractive and welcoming place for residents and visitors.

Residents are encouraged to review the Council Report (click here to view) and provide their feedback via the survey option below. The consultation period will be open for at least 28 days, allowing ample time for community members to share their thoughts and suggestions.

Next Steps

Following the consultation period, a Council Report summarizing the community feedback will be presented to the Council in October 2024. If approved, these parks will be listed in the updated Dogs in Public Places Council Policy.
