Resurfacing of the Mt Claremont Lakes has been completed. Whilst undergoing routine cleaning maintenance of both top and bottom lakes in July 2016 it was identified that there were issues with the base liner in the top lake. The liner was over 25 years old and badly deteriorated in several spots. The bottom lake had also suffered similar but less severe degradation.

As a result investigations were undertaken to identify options for replacing the liner which included shotcreting; concreting; plastic or hardened rubber liner; and fibreglassing for a suitable base and walls of the lake.

Shotcreting which is a combination of concrete and a fibreglass water holding product called Xypex, was hose blasted onto a reinforced steel mesh chain link. Before the shotcreting could commence, the base of the lake was reconfigured to meet Australian Safety Standards and to meet the water holding capacity required for the nine irrigated parks in the Mt Claremont area.

Shotcrete and associated works were completed during September 2016.

The lake is currently full and undergoing test pumping for the irrigation cycles required for the parks in the Mt Claremont area. At this early stage, the holding capacity is 1.4 million litres of water with no recorded loss in this top lake.

The artwork commissioned for the Nagal Pass Public Artwork has received the thumbs up from motorists. The artwork “The Grandis Leaf“ was developed and designed by visual artist Leanne Bray over the past 12 months, in response to the Public Art Project run by the Nedlands Arts Committee.

The artwork has been installed against the 30 metre long retaining wall at Nagal Pass and Stubbs Terrace in Karrakatta.

Part of the Artist's intention was to capture the City’s history including the years before European settlement including its river, beaches and bushlands that provided an abundant home for the traditional owners of the area, the Noongar people.

The purpose of the artwork is to bring to mind the natural flora and fauna of the area before development and has used the artwork to indicate where there was an abundance of native plants and as a reminder of how civilisation can be ruthless when it comes to progress.

In the coming weeks, the area will be landscaped and City’s Park staff will plant two large and two medium sized Banksias adjacent to the artwork and smaller Banksias on the ground around the base.

It's an exciting time for the City with the demolition works having now commenced.

As part of the refurbishment of the Allen Park Lower Pavilion, the majority of the building will be fully replaced. The demolition works have well and truly started, there's no going back now!

The old parts of the building that have been demolished will be replaced with new larger facilities including change rooms, public toilets, kitchen and stores. The main hall isn't going anywhere, as it will be fully refurbished and receive a fresh clean new look to match the new sections of the facility.

Temporary toilets are available on site and the majority of the car park is still available for use.

Following community engagement and a Council Resolution, the City has installed a range of ParkFit fitness equipment at College Park, Princess Road, Nedlands. Almost 80% of respondents indicated the preference to the chosen location.

This equipment complements the Youth Recreation Area and existing fitness equipment, catering for exercise to a wide range of muscle groups. Park users of various ages will enjoy the fitness and health benefits offered by this new installation. Small plaques give instructions on the correct techniques.

In keeping with the aesthetics of the park and the public’s desire to keep College Park as natural as possible, the equipment was installed in-ground, rather than constructing several concrete bases.
