Sporting Facilities Survey: Padel and Pickleball
The City is reviewing its sporting facilities as part of delivering the Community Council Plan and developing a new Strategic Active Sports Plan. This review allows the city to reassess its sporting infrastructure to ensure it reflects current sporting trends and the changing needs of the community.
The review looks at the condition and use of existing sporting assets, opportunities to better support local clubs, and ways to encourage healthy, active lifestyles. It also considers how the City can accommodate new and emerging sports and whether some facilities could be transformed into multisport precincts for broader community use.
One area is the City’s tennis courts. Across City‑managed courts and local clubs (Allen Park, Dalkeith, and Nedlands), there are 72 courts, considered an over-provision relative to the City's population and demand. City‑managed courts at Hollywood, College Park, Mt Claremont, and Lawler Park are free for casual use, while commercial coaching are required to book and incurs a fee. These courts require ongoing maintenance and repair due to age and, in some cases, vandalism.
At the same time, sports such as padel and pickleball are rapidly growing across Australia. Pickleball is played on an open, smaller court with a lightweight plastic ball and simple paddles, while padel is played in an enclosed court using a tennis‑style ball and rackets designed for fast rebounds off the walls. Both can be played on modified tennis courts, with one tennis court able to accommodate:
2–3 padel courts
3–4 pickleball courts (or dual‑marked layouts)
As part of the review, the City is exploring whether some tennis courts could be converted to padel or pickleball facilities, or dual marked, and is seeking community feedback on these potential changes.
This consultation will be open for a period of four weeks (28 days).
