Montario Quarter recognised as a world leader in sustainability

The City has worked closely with Land Corp in developing Montario Quarter and the northern and central parklands are now open!
Montario Quarter is the perfect place for entertaining, fitness, relaxing, art and fun, and high quality, carefully designed parks and public open spaces will be a key feature as this precinct develops.
The Green Building Council Australia (GBCA) has recognised Montario Quarter as being among the world's leading sustainable developments, through accreditation as a 6-Star Green Star Community.
Receiving GBCA's highest precinct sustainability rating, Montario Quarter was acknowledged for key sustainability elements including:
- More than 25% of the site retained as public open space
- Water-wise landscaping and re-vegetation of the retained bushland using local native species
- Early community engagement to identify local values for the retention of key heritage/environmental features
- Improved building energy and water use performance through sustainable building Design Guidelines
- Encouraging access to local-sourced fresh food, with requirements on developers to install a community garden as part of the development

Annual Bushland Spraying Program - Update

Environmental weeds cause erosion, alter water availability, change soil nutrients, increase the likelihood of bush fires and change the vegetation communities within bushland areas. The annual spraying program is being undertaken by Contractors from July through to October 2019 to control environmental weeds in the following bushland areas:- Shenton Bushland
- Allen Park
- Hollywood Reserve
- Birdwood Parade Bushland
- Point Resolution Bushland
- Mt Claremont Oval Bushland
- Mt Claremont Community Centre
- Swanbourne Estate
The City will be focusing on the control of bulbous weeds, and annual and perennial grass weeds using the herbicides listed below:
- Metsulfuron-methyl and 2 2-DPA (Dalapon): used to control bulbous weeds
- Glyphosate: used in conjunction with metsulfuron-methyl to control bulbous weeds
- Fusilade: used to control annual and perennial grass weeds.
Signage will be displayed whilst these works are occurring.
The City undertakes environmental weed control to improve biodiversity values and to reduce the negative impacts environmental weeds cause to the ecosystems, for example they compete with native plants, thereby reducing the species and diversity for both flora and fauna.

Point Resolution Reserve - Greenway update

The has completed the final stage of a project to expand the existing greenway corridor in the top section of Point Resolution Reserve in accordance with the Point Resolution Master Plan.
Approximately 7,000 water-wise, locally occurring native shrubs and groundcovers were planted following the installation of fencing and the laying of certified mulch.
Ongoing maintenance and weed control will continue in the coming months.

Swanbourne Dunes - Coastwest Grant - Planting is complete

The project was completed with 6,000 coastal seedlings (including tree guards) being planted on the Coastwest project site. Ongoing weed management is also scheduled to continue through Spring and early summer.
This project is in partnership with the Swanbourne Coastal Alliance and the Western Australian Planning Commission’s Coastwest Program, and will assist the City to reduce erosion, control environmental weeds as well as increase habitat and improve ecological corridors.

Railway Reserve Greenway - Final stage of greenway corridor extension from Karrakatta to Claremont-Nedlands boundary

The City has completed the final stage of a project to expand this existing greenway corridor in the top section of Point Resolution Reserve in accordance with the Point Resolution Masterplan.
Approximately 7,000 water-wise, locally occurring native shrubs and groundcovers were installed following the installation of fencing and spreading of certified mulch. Ongoing maintenance and weed control will continue in the coming months.

Railway Reserve Greenway - Project Completed

The City recently completed another project to create a green corridor along Nedlands section of the rail reserve. This project revegetated parts of the grass verge areas on the western side and eastern side of the railway line.
Following the removal of grass weeds and limestone rubble in May, certified mulch and 5700 seedlings were planted in June.
All planted species of native trees, shrubs and ground covers are waterwise, are of local provenance and naturally occurring in the region.

Swanbourne Dunes - Coastwest Grant - Planting

The project is moving towards completion with 6000 coastal seedlings planted including tree guards. Ongoing weed management is also scheduled to continue through spring and early summer.

Railway Reserve Greenway - Stage 5 project to commence

Works begin on 28 May for approximately four weeks to extend the greenway corridor from Karrakatta to the Claremont-Nedlands boundary.
The works will include site preparation, mulching and planting with native trees, shrubs and ground covers that are found naturally in the region.
It is expected that the work will be completed by the end of June.
The work will be undertaken in three areas (click on the heading above to view images of the proposed areas):
- The largest section extends along the eastern side of Stubbs Terrace from Karrakatta train station south to the Claremont Nedlands boundary.
- The second area extends along the western side of Stubbs Terrace just south of the Nagal Underpass and north of Quintilian Road.
- With the third section on the west side of Railway Road just south Nagal Underpass.
The corridor areas will be planted with Waterwise native trees, shrubs and ground covers in June. Approximately 4500 locally occurring native shrubs and ground covers will be planted. All species are local provenance native species that naturally occur in the region.

Point Resolution Reserve - River Foreshore Restoration - Final stages

The City has commenced the final stage to expand the existing greenway corridor at Point Resolution Reserve in accordance with the Point Resolution Masterplan. Invasive weeds were removed in May and June. Fencing and certified mulch is currently being installed. This will be followed by the installation of approximately 7000 water-wise, locally occurring native shrubs and ground covers later in July.
This project involves:
- Stabilising and protecting existing vegetation
- Removing invasive weeds
- Revegetating degraded areas in order to increase biodiversity, improve habitat and protect the foreshore from tidal and storm surges.
