Background

The West Australian State Government is proposing to amend the Local Government Act 1995 to reduce the number of elected members in accordance with population thresholds. In order to comply with the proposed amendments, the City has been invited to initiate a ward and representation review.

The City of Nedlands has four wards with three councillors elected for each ward and a mayor elected at large. To achieve the requested reduction in the number of councillors and balance the representation to acceptable thresholds, various options are available.

Some of the options include moving electors between existing wards to correct the imbalance, moving to two wards of four councillors each, and abolishing the ward system resulting in 8 councillors. In addition to the councillors, one mayor elected at large will remain for all proposed options.

What is happening now

A Discussion Paper has been prepared that outlines the City's current ward system, the review process and options for change.
