The City recently reviewed the Dog Local Law 2023 and the of Places where Dogs are Prohibited Absolutely and Places which are Dog Exercise Areas (the List). A report to Council was presented in the Ordinary Council Meeting held 28 March 2023 Item 19.2 CEO04.03.23 which proposed the process for a new Dogs Local Law 2023.
Council resolved to give public notice as per the requirements of the Local Government Act 1995 and Dog Act 1976 which was open from the 28 April 2023 and closed on 30 June 2023 seeking feedback of the local law and the List.
The results of the consultation and adoption of the Dog Local Law 2023 were presented in the Ordinary Council Meeting held on 12 December 2023 Item ‘19.4 CEO39.12.23 Adoption of City of Nedlands Local Law 2023’. The local law and the List of Places where Dogs are Prohibited Absolutely and Places which are Dog Exercise Areas was adopted.
Throughout this review period, the community have raised their concerns regarding the signage around the Allen Park Precinct. In response to this, the City will be installing additional signs in the coming months to better identify designated dog exercise areas where dogs can be off lead and areas where dogs must be on lead, particularly in the conservation area of Allen Park bushland.
Conservation areas are particularly sensitive to dogs being off lead. Dogs can disturb wildlife, damage habitats, excreting where the owners can't see, and pose concerns to visitors to the bushland who don’t want to have dogs approach them. There is also potential risk of wildlife encounters with spiders or snakes, and an increased risk of ticks.

Minimising off-track movement will give the bushland a better chance to establish, both from self-seeding and revegetation programs, improving diversity and overall condition. Reducing disturbance will also improve habitat for native fauna.
The new signage aims to promote responsible pet ownership and ensure the safety and preservation of our bushland. The City also anticipates additional signage to be installed in other areas of the district in the future.
